Hi,

I've just bought myself a 91 Maserati 222 SR with a 2.8 liter engine. The car had been not driven for a year. It is in good condition, but the engine has some troubles.

When I first test droved it, it started badly and idling was very bad when the engine was cold, but when the engine got warmed up, these problems were gone.

Yesterday the car was delivered to me. The problems mentioned earlier were not gone but they were not so serious anymore. So I went for a drive. Got to drive about 3km and then when I lifted foot off gas pedal the engine stalled. It started again when I tried, ran for about 1-2 sec and then again stalled. Started it again, and the engine didn't stall if I pressed gas pedal a little, so I got do drive to nearby gas station with car few more times stalling. But after that when it stalled in the gas station it didn’t start again. There were no weird noises, the car just died and didn't start again.

Any ideas what could be the problem considering that the car hasn’t been seriously driven for about a year?

I also need to do cam belt change, so all good sites for parts would be helpful, because I live in Estonia and we don't have a local dealer here and it's on of the first Biturbos here.

Hope thats not problem that I posted in english, my german is't so good.

Best regards,
Vigri
is the fuel pump always running when turning ignition on ? U can hear it!

check the 3 relais in a row, at the side, inside the engine compartment.

check the water sensor ( blue) and check air temp sensor (brown). check the values in Ohm, cold and warm and post it.

and the forum from enrico, there is also an international forum in the biturboclub italia forum, maybe some kidding guys online but when you write serios you get some answeres. i remember there is an spyder of the biturborange in estonia - did´nt know on which page in the net i´ve seen. the description of the problem is a little bit to common to fix it here and it seems to be you need professional help by some motor mechanic.

Hi,

The fuel pump is running, but my mechanic suspected that the fuel pressure is a bit low.

Spark plugs where not in good condition also. Seemed like the car had ran rich mixture before.

We have holidays here In Estonia at the moment so I can’t provide news about progress before Wednesday.
Fuel pressure is about 3 bar, so that shoudn't be the problem. But the spark plugs were black so it indicates that car was running rich mixture before. What could be the cause of it?

Try to mesure the resistanses tomorrow, but I can't do it with warm engine because it doesn't start.
Hi,

I got the car running finally. The problem was in the coolant temperature sensor. I also changes timing belt, engine oil, coolant, brake fluid and had some more little thing done. Now the car runs well. Thanks to all for help you provided.

Hi,

I have used the car now daily for about a week, and it runs great. But there are also some problems left.
• The speedometer doesn’t show the speed correctly, when I drive at 100 km/h speedometer shows 70 km/h.
• The fuel level gauge only shows maximum of ¼ of the tank even if the tank is full.
• When the air conditioning is turned on it started to blow in bad stink but when air conditioning is turned off it stops. Does it have somewhere an air filter for air conditioning unit or what might be the problem?
Is the speedometer counting the right distance? If yes you'll have the problem that the needle axis only slipped to far to the left/anticlockwise, i.e. also the lower speed until 30km/h will not be indicated immedeately? Then open the dash hood and readjust it with care to the right/clockwise.
Is the speedometer failing in counting the correct distance as well? Then adjust the poties at the back of the unit.

Inside your tank the swivelling  arm of your fuel level indicator might be bad or its joints arrested. Access it through the round revision cover on the top of your empty tank. If you are already working at the tank, clean as well the little cap filter sitting down on the left, directly on the fuel discharge pipe !

There will be normally no aircon filter in this '91 modell, but you will have organic mold built up inside the evaporater coils. This occurs if the rubber drop out hose(shown below as well on pic 4-14) for the condensation water relief has been clogged for longer terms; check this from underneath the car around the bell housing.
To clean the coil from the mold,- look everything up regarding "Armaturenbrettrausreißen" in this forum,- we have real experts here!

Just wanna add one little hint here: Hope you made your engine oil & filter change with at least synthec quality like Mobil1 15W50? If not, your 2,8L is gonna die soon depending on old mineralic oil residues! As counter measure, I recommend another oil & filter change for prevention only!
Oil that went in is Castrol edge 10W60.
Haven't watched if the speedometer is counting the right distance, but I'm going to check it over for the end of the day.
Fuel gauge siims to move a little more by now, but not ower half a tank yet.
The bad smell went away itself with few days so thats ok for no.
Hi,

When i was doing over radio contacts something in passenger side door made a really loud click. After that the central locking doesn't work any more. When I sit in and shut the do something near glove compartment makes some roaring(can't find a better word) noise for a second or so and then it stops. But when one door is locked and other is not and the doors are closed that same sound appears again but is constant and doesn't go away after while.
Any suggestions what could be the problem?
