Maserati 222 SR idle problems - Vigri - 11.05.2009

Hi,

I got my Maserati finally together for this season few weeks ago. I got many of the problems fixed over the winter but I still have a little problem with idling, especially with cold engine.
The problem is that when I take my foot off the gas pedal, revs tend to drop almost to zero and sometimes engine also stalls. If engine doesn’t stall then the revs jump up again and start to sway for about 5-10 seconds until all clears out. This happens also with a warm engine, but when engine is cold this kind of swaying takes place even without touching gas pedal.
What might be the reason for this?
Vacuum leak? Water temperature sensor?(although I replaced it just last year)
I would grateful for any speculation over the problem.

reason is, that you have rose the idle rpm, by trying to adjust it higher.
its not possible to turn it higher! If you try, you have finally your symptoms.

unplug idle valve.
close the idle srew ( the right one, if you stand before the car) to 0.

idle should be around 600 ( very low, almost stalling)

turn right screw slowly open until idle is at 700. ( still to low)

plug idle valve in. Idle should now rise to 800-850.

Hi

Thanks for the advice! Actually as it turned out the problem was vice versa. The idle screw was completely shut. When I first unplugged the idle valve engine stalled but second time it managed to stay in idle. So I adjusted the idle a little and now the problem seems to be gone.

But I noticed that the rev counter must be lying because it previously showed engine idling at about 900 rpm and now it runs at about 1050 rpm.

But many thanks for the advice!
