Hi

Started to change the clutch thrust bearing on my 222SR and after few evenings in garage I got finally far enough to pull out the gearbox. But for my misfortune it doesn’t want to come off because there is not enough room for clutch thrust leaver to come past wall between engine compartment and passenger compartment. Gearbox need to come about 1-2 cm more back in order to get it off but there’s just not enough space for it. Is the only way to get it of loosening engine fittings and trying to move engine few centimeters forward or is it possible to take off the clutch trust leaver before taking off the gearbox?

Also if you have any other good advice for job lick this or maybe some hints what parts to check during this job it would be really helpful because I haven’t done anything like this before.

Happy holidays
Vigri
Hi there Vigri:

Somewhere here in the Forum are the specific links to complete Biturbo Manuals. Since I am at Sansibar right now my computer connection is very limited. You need to pull off the gearbox first, there is no way around. Loosen all motor mounting screws from below, then push/slide the engine towards the front, and it will work!
Happy holidays,- how can you choose such a fricken, greasy job for X-mas man?
Sansibar, very fine, is Freddys grave there Thorsten ?

Regards
Hi,

I took a little brake for holidays. But thanks for all the advice. I’ll hope I get the gearbox out before New Year.

So, no Maserati no have until the upcoming year Vigri? Hope this is not your only car? Good luck, Thorsten Drink
No it’s not my only car. I have an Alfa for a daily driver.
Actually it’s my project car and I don’t drive it in winter because they salt roads here in Estonia in winter to keep roads clean from snow, but it is awful for cars. The car at the moment has as a really solid body, no visible rust anywhere and I want to keep it that way. The car will stay in garage until spring, so I have no rush with the project.
I’m planning to replace the clutch set so can anybody tell me how much torque will the original clutch handle?
I know I can get all the original part from www.eurospares.co.uk but maybe someone knows some alternative places.
I’ve also done some research and like it seems clutch disk dimensions are exactly the same as E36 328 BMW.

Vigri
clutch is not the same,
inner toothing is differnt.
Hi,

Gearbox is finally of the car. I managed to get the needed clearance by unbolting the clutch pressure plate.
Now I’m wondering if maybe it would be wise idea for me to change the clutch plate and the pressure plate also, because I’m thinking of doing some engine tuning as well in the near future, so it might be wise to upgrade clutch as well.
It might be useful if someone could tell me how much torque the standard clutch can handle also.
Another issue is the gearbox. When I last drove it I noticed that with second and third gear the gearbox made some clattering noise, especially with second gear. Any ideas of what might be the problem? Also has anyone taken one apart? Are there any extraordinary bearings or something that fore sure has to be ordered from abroad?
Also if you have any information considering the ZF gearbox like how much torque it could handle I would be very interested.
Any tips what to remember when butting it all together afterwards or ideas of what should be changed also during these jobs are also very welcome.

Vigri
What do you believe will happen if you increase the torque on a broken gearbox? Below I posted for you again the link to all online manuals with the tec. spec. tables for the ZF-gearbox. Spares you'll get from all known sources, best are Maserati Compound and MIE in the US.

All links are working now Vigri, ZF-Specs and repair you'll find at bowery, good luck, Thorsten Drink
Hi,

I have no intentions of putting the gearbox back as it is. I’m going to have it looked by specialist and change what needs to be changed.
Thanks for the links!
